When Indianapolis Star sports columnist Gregg Doyel tweeted that he was writing a column last night, his friends and followers knew precisely what it was all about.

Doyel delivered a column ripping into New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels for turning down an offer to be the new head coach of the Indianapolis Colts at the very last moment Tuesday, opting to stay with the Pats.

And, a bit surprisingly, Doyel led with a silver lining.

“Josh McDaniels is a punk and a loser, but he’s not your punk. He’s not your loser. He’s not your head coach, thank God,” Doyel wrote.

The Colts were ready to introduce McDaniels as their head coach in a Wednesday morning press conference, which they had to awkwardly cancel. They replaced that with a different press conference for general manager Chris Ballard to address the situation the team now finds itself in.

Doyel went on to call McDaniels a “rat” and a “selfish little jerk,” and he has good reason for that language. Because the Colts had to wait till after the Patriots played in the Super Bowl to make their McDaniels hire official, his change of heart puts the team in a sticky spot. They are the only NFL team left without a head coach.
