At the Open Society Foundations, we believe in recycling. But we were admittedly surprised to see how deeply The Washington Times apparently believes in it, too. How else to explain Rebecca Hagelin’s Feb. 4 piece, “Disruption at home and abroad — follow the money: Part 1” (Web), which is built entirely on tired talking points about paid protesters that have been thoroughly debunked by multiple fact-checking outlets.

Readers interested in learning more about what the Open Society Foundations actually does to advance democratic practice and human rights in the United States and around the world, visit our website. As they’ll see, we support organizations and individuals who fight for justice, equality, more accountable and transparent governments, and yes, freedom of expression. As such, we firmly support The Washington Times’ right to publish its perspective. We just wish that perspective would be fact-based and not quite so predictably made up of rehashed, discredited arguments. Surely your readers deserve fresher food for thought.
