Philadelphia will celebrate its first Lombardi Trophy with a Super Bowl parade for the champion Eagles on Thursday.
Mayor Jim Kenney hopes that a certain “contingent” of fans will not continue to destroy his city that day.
Kenney called the fans who vandalized Philadelphia in celebration of the Eagles’ 41-33 win over the Patriots Sunday night a small, “knucklehead contingent” and told them to stay home from Thursday’s parade, The Associated Press reported.
“I think it will be a different tenor, a different element,” Kenney said about his expectations for the parade.
After the Super Bowl, some Eagles fans set fires, looted a gas station and broke a hotel awning and a traffic light.
The Philadelphia School District and Archdiocese of Philadelphia will give students (and teachers) the day off to attend the parade, and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) will offer free subway transportation in the vicinity of the parade, sponsored by Independence Blue Cross.
The parade will start on Broad Street and conclude at the Philadelphia Museum of Art — home of the famous “Rocky steps,” appropriately.
