The Indianapolis Colts have reportedly been left at the altar by the man they expected to be their head coach next season.

Josh McDaniels had been announced earlier Tuesday as the Colts new head coach and was scheduled to be introduced officially Wednesday. But ESPN’s Adam Schefter, in what he called a “stunner,” says that won’t happen.

“Patriots’ OC Josh McDaniels has decided NOT to accept Colts’ HC job and will remain with New England, sources told ESPN,” Mr. Schefter tweeted.

The Colts later confirmed the spurning, saying McDaniels informed them Tuesday evening.

According to Schefter, the Patriots stepped up after Sunday’s Super Bowl and offered their offensive-coordinator more money, weeks after McDaniels had interviewed with, and impressed, the Colts.

“In the past 48 hours, Patriots owner Robert Kraft began talking with Josh McDaniels and ultimately wound up sweetening his contract, helping to entice him to remain in New England, per sources,” Schefter tweeted.

The Colts fired head coach Chuck Pagano immediately after a disappointing regular season that saw the team go 4-12.

The Colts haven’t had a winning season, and franchise quarterback Andrew Luck has been ineffective or injured, since they were blown out of the AFC Championship Game by a 45-7 score three years ago by … the Patriots.
