BRISTOL, Va. (AP) - A Virginia man who authorities say leapt from a van and began beating a panhandler has been arrested.

The Bristol Herald Courier cites a state police release that says a trooper saw 60-year-old A. Victor Asher, who was armed with a wooden stick, beating an 18-year-old man who was standing on the side of an exit ramp around 12:35 p.m. Monday.

Police say it took several troopers to take Asher into custody because he was combative.

Charges against Asher include malicious wounding, being drunk in public, resisting arrest, illegal possession of a controlled substance and assault on a police officer. Asher was also charged with domestic violence because he’s accused of assaulting the woman who was driving the van.

The release says both the woman and the panhandler refused treatment their injuries and a trooper then took the panhandler to the nearest bus station after buying him meal and bus ticket.
