SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah legislators are piling up a record high number of proposals for new laws at the start of their 45-day lawmaking session, logging 1,341 “bill files” as of last week’s deadline.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports the number is 43 more than the previous record of 1,298, set just last year, and lawmakers can still file more if they get permission.
Republican Senate President Wayne Niederhauser of Sandy says the volume shows the intensity of community issues, and that putting a limit on free speech would be wrong.
He says lawmakers can always vote “no” on bills they don’t like.
Utah legislative leaders discussed last November curbing the ever-increasing number of bill requests.
That was after the state Legislature passed a record 535 bills in 2017, up from the previous high of 528 in 2015.
