MIAMI (AP) - Miami-Dade County Public Schools superintendent Alberto Carvalho has been tapped for a job in New York City.
A news release from New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office confirmed Carvalho’s selection Wednesday as the city’s new schools chancellor. He would be replacing Carmen Farina, who is retiring.
A Miami-Dade schools spokeswoman says Carvalho hasn’t accepted the job yet. The school board has scheduled a special meeting Thursday morning to discuss it.
Carvalho has led Miami-Dade’s school system, the nation’s fourth largest, since 2008. The New York City Department of Education is the country’s largest system.
The Miami-Dade schools website says the district has become one of the nation’s highest-performing urban school systems, receiving systemwide accreditation from AdvancEd in 2014.
Carvalho was selected as Florida’s 2014 Superintendent of the Year, as well as the 2014 National Superintendent of the Year.
