ALPHARETTA, Ga. (AP) - The mayor of an Atlanta suburb has resigned to campaign for Georgia Secretary of State, prompting two of the city’s council members to run for the now open mayor’s seat.
The city of Alpharetta says in a statement that as promised earlier this month, Mayor David Belle Isle announced his resignation Feb. 21. His resignation triggered council members Jim Gilvin and Chris Owens to resign as well, as they had previously announced their intentions to run for mayor.
The resignations have left Mayor Pro Tem Donald Mitchell and council members Jason Binder, Dan Merkel, and Ben Burnett to lead the northern Fulton County city until a special election is held May 22 to fill the vacated seats.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Belle Isle had been mayor since 2012.
