KEARNS, Utah (AP) - Authorities say five Utah students in less than a week could face criminal charges after either having been arrested or cited for allegedly making unfounded threats on social media.

The Deseret News reports the Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake says it last was notified Sunday of a picture on Snapchat “which showed a rifle in the suspect’s lap and a warning to ’not come to school on Monday.’”

Detectives identified the student an hour later as a 13-year-old boy who attends Thomas Jefferson Junior High School in Kearns. Officers then went to the boy’s house.

Authorities say the gun pictured was an Airsoft rifle, and there was no immediate threat to the school.

The wave of student threats comes after the shooting earlier this month at a Florida high school that left 17 people dead.
