Maine Gov. Paul LePage said more needs to be done to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill.
He told Fox News on Monday that society tends to “look the other way” when it comes to mental illness and that “when we look the other way people die.”
LePage said background checks are “absolutely important.” But he said federal privacy laws prevent illnesses from being flagged. He said those rules need to be “loosened up.”
He also weighed in on the controversial subject of arming school staff. He said he supports allowing teachers who’ve been trained in how to use a gun to have one inside a school to protect students. But he said it would have to be voluntary.
