CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago’s animal shelter has been ordered to develop a written policy on animal euthanasia and to follow basic standards for the humane treatment of impounded dangerous animals.
The Chicago City Council’s Finance Committee advanced both ordinances Monday at the request of Ald. Ray Lopez, who’s a longtime critic of the city’s overcrowded Animal Care and Control shelter.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that one of the ordinances was clearly in response to the December euthanasia of a pit bull that had attacked the shelter’s director, leaving her hospitalized with leg and arm wounds.
The newspaper reports that Susan Russell ordered the dog immediately euthanized, in apparent violation of city protocols for dog-biting incidents.
Finance Committee Chairman Edward Burke said he’s surprised that an animal euthanasia policy “doesn’t already exist” in Chicago.
