NFL commissioner Roger Goodell plans to fine Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones after Jones spoke out against NFL owners extending Goodell’s contract and threatened legal action, according to the New York Times.
Jones was against the NFL owners’ compensation committee extending the commissioner’s contract in a way he believed to be too generous. He went as far as to threaten a lawsuit against owners who supported the extension, notably Atlanta’s Arthur Blank.
Jones will also be punished for his comments defending Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott, who served a suspension during the 2017 season for a domestic violence allegation despite multiple appeals.
The report indicates the fine will be in the millions of dollars and be issued in the coming weeks. The amount will represent the legal fees the compensation committee spent on defending itself from Jones’ suit threat and similar fees the NFL spent defending its decision to suspend Elliott.
The Cowboys didn’t comment but said they were unaware of the impending penalty.
