NEWTON, Mass. (AP) - Two small liberal arts colleges in Newton are considering merging to keep tuition as low as possible and improve the student experience.
The Boston Globe reports the presidents of Mount Ida College and Lasell College announced the potential merger Saturday.
Some small private colleges face declining enrollment as families struggle to afford private college tuition.
Boston University and Wheelock College finalized a merger in October. The Boston Conservatory merged with Berklee College of Music in 2016.
In Vermont, Johnson State College and Lyndon State colleges officially merge in July.
Lasell has 2,100 students. Mount Ida has 1,500 students.
They say they could save money by pooling resources and eliminating redundancies.
A committee with representatives from both schools will meet soon. A decision is expected in the next few months.
