The Washington Wizards are bringing back a familiar face for one of their two open roster spots.
The Wizards signed veteran point guard Ramon Sessions to a 10-day contract on Thursday, according to multiple reports. Sessions previously played with the Wizards from 2015-2016.
Sessions, 31, will be the Wizards’ third point guard with the absence of John Wall (knee). He spent time with the New York Knicks this season, but was waived in January.
The Wizards will have 10 days with Sessions, and will then have three options: Offer him another 10-day contract, sign him for the rest of the season or let him walk. Teams are allowed to give a player only two 10-day contracts before having to choose whether to sign him for the rest of the season.
During the 2015-16 season, Sessions averaged 9.9 points and 2.9 assists per game in 20.3 minutes per game. He appeared in all 82 games.
The Wizards initially traded guard Andre Miller to acquire Sessions at the 2015 trade deadline.
Washington has continually searched for a backup point guard behind John Wall. This season, Tomas Satoransky has emerged as a viable option and has thrived as a starter in the nine games since Wall underwent a knee scope.
Behind Satoransky, Tim Frazier has been the backup. Frazier, though, is recovering from a broken nose and will wear a mask. Coach Scott Brooks said Frazier is not on a minutes restriction.
Sessions provides insurance if Satoransky or Frazier aren’t available.
