SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) - The Vermont Agency of Education says a California teacher who was arrested on suspicion of having sex with a 16-year-old student previously had his teaching credential in Vermont suspended for sexually harassing a student.

But The San Bernardino Sun reports Rialto Unified School District spokeswoman Syeda Jafri said Tuesday the district was not aware of any issues involving his employment in Vermont at the time of hiring the teacher in August 2006.

Jafri says the district contacted the teacher’s previous school district and checked his credentials.

Barry Todd Noden, a teacher and band director at Eisenhower High School, turned himself in to authorities Feb. 8 after a nearly yearlong investigation into allegations that he was having sexual contact with a minor student. The district says he has been on administrative leave since Feb. 22, 2017.

Noden has pleaded not guilty.
