PHOENIX (AP) - A Phoenix-area school district has placed its superintendent on paid administrative leave following growing concerns about conflicts of interest and procurement practices.
The board of the Scottsdale Unified School District on Wednesday placed Superintendent Denise Birdwell on leave after a prolonged closed-door session with its legal counsel.
District officials say the board acted in the best interest of the district and no additional information is available because it’s a personnel matter.
The district hired an outside attorney in November to investigate allegations regarding the district’s use of an architecture firm for construction projects and other issues involving conflicts of interest.
The Arizona Attorney General’s Office also launched a probe late last year.
Birdwell became the district’s interim superintendent in January 2016. She was named superintendent later that year.
