NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A nonprofit reforestation group says it will plant 150 trees in three New Orleans neighborhoods on Saturday.
The group, called Sustaining Our Urban Landscape , or SOUL, says about 150 volunteers will plant trees such as baldcypress and live oak in about 70 yards in three neighborhoods.
A news release says that when mature, each tree can absorb up to 880 gallons of water a day, helping to reduce flooding. Their shade cools houses, too.
SOUL’s founder and executive director, Susannah Burley, says the group’s working with Whole Foods Market and the Rotary Club of Mid-City.
She says Saturday’s event will be SOUL’s largest since its formation in June 2016. The group expects its total to reach nearly 820 large native trees planted in New Orleans by the end of March.
