The Washington Capitals placed defenseman Taylor Chorney on waivers Tuesday, a day after acquiring defenseman Michal Kempny from the Chicago Blackhawks.
Chorney, 30, appeared in 24 games this season, with the majority of his playing time coming when defenseman Matt Niskanen missed 14 games with a upper body injury. The Capitals often kept Chorney inactive as the their seventh defenseman.
By waiving Chorney, the Capitals free up an extra roster space and clear $800,000 in salary cap space. For the majority of the season, the Capitals have kept 22 players on their active roster. The maximum allowed is 23.
If Chorney clears waivers, he’ll join the Capitals’ American Hockey League affiliate in Herhsey. A career-long journeyman, Chorney has played 400 games in the AHL, compared to 165 games in the NHL.
Chorney joined the Capitals organization in 2015 as a free agent. He has one goal and three assists this season.
