MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The death of rock star Prince is leaving many to wonder what might have been for the Super Bowl in his hometown of Minneapolis.
The “Purple Rain” singer died of an accidental painkiller overdose in 2016. He performed the Super Bowl halftime show 11 years ago in Miami.
Minnesota Super Bowl Host Committee spokesman Mike Howard says people have jokingly asked, “Can we just have a Prince hologram?”
Justin Timberlake is the halftime performer at Sunday’s game at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Grammy-winning producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis went heavy on Minnesota musical acts for a free, 10-day fan festival in downtown Minneapolis. A concert featuring Sheila E., Morris Day and The Time, and The Revolution drew thousands of fans on Monday.
Jam says Prince is “here in spirit.”
