JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) - Another Jersey City police officer has admitted accepting money for off-duty security work that he didn’t perform.
Juan Berrios pleaded guilty Friday to conspiracy to commit fraud and accept corrupt payments. He faces up to five years in prison when he’s sentenced April 16.
City rules mandate that employers hiring off-duty officers must pay the city for their work. The city would then pay the officers after withholding certain fees and taxes.
Berrios admitted accepting direct payments from some employers in return for allowing them to operate at worksites without a police officer present when such a presence was required.
In one instance, he submitted a pay voucher claiming he worked traffic management for a vendor during the same afternoon he accepted overtime from the city for a court appearance.
