FOREST PARK, Ga. (AP) - A Georgia father-of-five helped his wife and kids escape their burning home before he died in the fire.

Forest Park Deputy Fire Chief Matt Jackson tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution responding firefighters found 30-year-old Brandon Gamble dead inside a hallway early Thursday. His wife, Tyeisha Gamble, and five children had made it safely outside.

Gamble’s sister-in-law, Keeshay Wingo, says Gamble broke a window for his wife to escape, and then ran through flames to get to the children’s bedroom. She says the kids never saw him, but heard his instructions to break a window and climb out. A neighbor, Jacob Stewart, say he did see hands passing the children down.

The children, ages 6-13, were treated for cuts. Their mother, Gamble’s sixth-grade sweetheart, remains hospitalized.

The fire’s cause is unknown.
