HOUSTON (AP) - Christopher Galbreath Jr. scored a career-high 33 points with 14 rebounds and Sam Houston State rallied from 14 points down to beat Houston Baptist 85-78 on Saturday night to clinch a Southland Conference Tournament berth.
Josh Delaney scored 14 points with three 3-pointers for the fourth-place Bearkats (17-11, 11-4), who needed a loss by McNeese (9-15, 6-8), which fell 90-74 to New Orleans (14-12, 11-4) on Saturday.
Jamal Williams’ free throw put the Bearkats up 57-56 after a 13-4 run and the lead traded hands until Galbreath’s jumper gave the Bearkats a 77-73 lead with 2:33 left. Phillip McKenzie’s free throw made it a one-point game, but Marcus Harris hit back-to-back 3s for an 83-76 lead with 50 seconds to go and the Huskies got no closer than five from there.
The Bearkats led briefly, but Edward Hardt scored six straight amid a 10-2 run and the Huskies led by as many 14 before taking a 44-36 lead into the break.
David Caraher scored 25 points, Braxton Bonds added 16 and Ian DuBose added 13 for Houston Baptist (6-21, 2-12).
