President Trump on Friday pinned the blame on Senate Democrats for the failure this week to approve a bill to protect “Dreamers,” saying Democrats had abandoned those illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as minors and now fear deportation.

“Cannot believe how BADLY DACA recipients have been treated by the Democrats…totally abandoned! Republicans are still working hard,” the president tweeted.

The Senate on Thursday killed a series of three bills aimed at fixing Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, the Obama-era temporary deportation amnesty for Dreams that is set to phase out March 5. There was broad agreement on the need to protect Dreamers but Republicans and Democrats clashed over measures to increase border security and limit legal immigration.

Mr. Trump ordered the phasing out of DACA in September and called for a legislative solution to the program that has been challenged as an unconstitutional use of executive authority by the Obama administration.
