MILWAUKEE (AP) - A Milwaukee police captain with 25 years of experience has been appointed interim chief of the department to replace Edward Flynn, who is retiring.

The city’s Fire and Police Commission selected 47-year-old Alfonso Morales Thursday night on a 4-3 vote over police Inspector Michael Brunson. Morales will serve as interim chief until a permanent hire is made sometime this year.

Flynn’s last day on the job is Friday. He announced his retirement last month after leading the department for 10 years.

Morales is a Milwaukee native born to Mexican immigrants. He currently is in charge of the department’s Project Safe Neighborhood-High Value Target program, which focuses on capturing the violent gun offenders.

Morales said after the vote he wants to rebuild community trust in the department.
