Steve Bannon, former chief strategist to President Trump, appeared before the House Intelligence Committee on Thursday.
“It’s a fine Navy day,” Mr. Bannon told reporters as he entered the room.
The questioning is occurring in private, and is expected to cover if Mr. Bannon was aware of any possible collusion between Russian officials and the Trump campaign during the 2016 election.
Rep. Mike Conaway, Texas Republican, spoke briefly to reporters outside of the meeting room, and said he wasn’t aware of White House counsel present during the questioning.
But the White House reportedly sent the committee a letter late Wednesday arguing executive privilege should cover the transition period in an attempt to keep Mr. Bannon from answering questions, according to CNN.
On Thursday though, Rep. Mike Quigley, Illinois Democrat, said there hasn’t been a formal exertion of executive privilege, but Mr. Bannon is acting like there has.
