Former President Barack Obama issued a call Thursday for more gun regulations in the wake of the mass school shooting in Florida.
“We are not powerless. Caring for our kids is our first job,” Mr. Obama tweeted. “And until we can honestly say that we’re doing enough to keep them safe from harm, including long overdue, common-sense gun safety laws that most Americans want, then we have to change.”
His comments came less than an hour after President Trump addressed the nation and called for more focus on mental-health solutions to gun violence.
After the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012, Mr. Obama pushed Congress for more background checks on gun purchases, an effort that the Senate rejected. He largely gave up on gun legislation after that.
