BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The union representing some Burlington city employees has endorsed independent Carina Driscoll, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders’ stepdaughter, who is running for mayor of the city where Sanders got his start in politics.

Union President Karl Labounty said his group believes Driscoll has the workers’ interests at heart - especially in regard to worker safety. WPTZ-TV reports the union represents the city’s public works employees and those in the treasurer’s office and at City Hall.

“She’s got her ears open, and she’s ready to help,” Labounty said.

Driscoll said she was honored to receive the endorsement and that employees deserve some control over the budgets that affects worker safety.

“It has always been important to me to let the employees know that I am listening to them, and that I have their back,” she said. “When it comes to safety, I think employees deserve to have some control over the budgets regarding how we spend money to keep employees safe.”

Incumbent Democratic Mayor Miro Weinberger, who is running for a third term, said he was disappointed not to receive the endorsement of the employee union. Safety has always been a priority of his administration.

Weinberger also noted he had received endorsements from three other city worker unions.

Also running for mayor in the March 6 Town Meeting Day election is independent Infinite Culcleasure.
