DULUTH, Minn. (AP) - A conservation officer says a Duluth police officer had little choice but to shoot an injured timber wolf that had a steel snare wrapped around its muzzle.
Minnesota Department of Natural Resources conservation officer Don Murray says the wolf was first spotted by state park employees near Tettegouche State Park last week. The wolf eventually turned up in Duluth on Saturday.
Murray tells Minnesota Public Radio News the wolf “did not stop.” He says putting down the wolf was “a last resort.”
The pursuit ended Saturday afternoon, just north of Marshall High School. Authorities could not determine who set the snare.
President Maureen Hackett of the advocacy group Howling for Wolves says banning snaring would reduce cases of wildlife and pets being accidentally caught.
