PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The president of Reed College will leave his post at the end of June after six years of running one of the country’s most prestigious liberal arts colleges.
The Oregonian/OregonLive reports officials with the Southeast Portland school made the announcement about John Kroger Friday.
A former U.S. Marine, federal prosecutor and Oregon attorney general, Kroger leaves after a contentious year on the liberal, activist campus in which students staged a lengthy occupation of Kroger’s office.
But Reed Board of Trustees chairman Roger Perlmutter said Kroger achieved the goals set out for him.
In a letter to the campus community, Perlmutter highlighted new academic programs, a more diverse faculty, growth in student applications, stronger student financial aid packages, improvement in campus facilities and growth in Reed’s endowment - from $457 million when Kroger began to $560 million.
Reed declined to make Kroger available for an interview.
