CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A restored version of a documentary about the 1969 hospital workers strike in Charleston will be available for purchase later this month.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reports the 30-minute documentary titled “I Am Somebody” will be available Feb. 20 on home video, DVD and Amazon Video.
The documentary was made by filmmaker Madeline Anderson and released in 1970. New York Times movie critics recently named it one of 28 must-see films directed by African-Americans.
More than 400 workers, mostly women, walked off their jobs at two hospitals for more than three months over issues of workplace discrimination and low wages.
The documentary covers the scope of the strike, the resistance among hospital officials, the confrontations between strikers and law enforcement and the speeches of national civil rights activists.
