President Trump said Thursday he was surprised that Democrats at his State of the Union speech wouldn’t applaud his announcement that black unemployment is the lowest on record.

Mr. Trump, speaking to Republican congressional leaders about the 2018 agenda, said Democrats state stone-faced as he ticked off ways the country is doing well. But he said he was particularly stunned that the good news for the black community wasn’t applauded.

“Perhaps they’d rather see us not do well than see our country do great,” the president said.

Democrats’ reaction to Mr. Trump has become a major theme out of this week’s speech, with some in the party refusing even to applaud first lady Melania Trump’s entrance into the House chamber.

That reaction contrasted with polls, which said the public thought Mr. Trump’s speech a success.
