DECATUR, Ga. (AP) - A Georgia woman whose 1-year-old daughter died after being left in a hot car has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports 25-year-old Dijanelle Fowler pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on Wednesday. Judge Linda Hunter’s sentence was less than the state’s requested 40 years, which she attributes to Fowler’s lack of criminal record and no allegations of poor parenting prior to the incident.
Fowler left her daughter, Skylar, in a hot car for five hours while getting her hair done last June. Fowler’s attorney Charles Brant says the heat killed Skylar after the car battery died.
Fowler said Tuesday that she takes full responsibility for her negligence and that the baby’s father, Louis Williams II, could have helped her more.
Fowler will get credit for time served.
