WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — President Trump on Thursday likened House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s calling the recent tax law-related bonuses “crumbs” to Hillary Clinton’s infamous “deplorable” comments from the 2016 campaign.
“That could be like ’deplorable,’ ” Mr. Trump said of Mrs. Pelosi’s comments. “Those two words — they seem to have a resemblance. I hope it has the same meaning.”
“But she called it crumbs when people are getting $2,000 and $3,000 dollars and $1,000 — that’s not crumbs. It’s a lot of money,” he said.
Mrs. Pelosi had said that the benefits corporations are getting out of the $1.5 trillion tax-cut law vastly outweigh the “crumbs” companies have been doling out in the way of bonuses and wage increases — comments that Republicans frequently bring up when touting the benefits of the bill.
A spokesman for Mrs. Pelosi said Republicans are being disingenuous and that they’ve been caught “red-handed” enriching their wealthy donors at the expense of working families.
“What’s deplorable is Republicans’ desperate effort to hide the multi-billion dollar corporate windfalls of the GOP tax scam behind a handful of meager, one-time bonuses,” said Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill. “The casual dishonesty of taking Leader Pelosi’s words out of context is nothing compared to the dishonesty of Republicans’ sales pitch on their tax scam itself.”

Mrs. Clinton famously said during the campaign that half of Mr. Trump’s supporters belonged in a “basket of deplorables.” She later was forced to apologize, but the phrase persisted during the campaign and afterward.
