TUCKER, Ga. (AP) - An Atlanta-area school district is moving forward with plans to build a new elementary school near a hazardous materials manufacturer.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Tuesday the DeKalb County School District says it’s taking steps to mitigate concerns about the proposed site for Smoke Rise Elementary School, including those raised by the county fire marshal.
A November email from Fire Marshal Joseph Cox says the site is within 2,000 feet (610 meters) of LPS Laboratories, and cites an Environmental Protection Agency recommendation of a minimum 3,000-foot (915-meter) buffer between new schools and potential fire, explosion and air quality hazards.
DeKalb Schools’ Chief Operations Officer Joshua Williams says the location meets state proximity regulations. He said the district is following the recommendations of an engineer, including adding height to a boundary wall.
