Golden State Warriors superstar Kevin Durant will not give up saying “Hail to the Redskins” if his favorite football team doesn’t sign quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
Durant has been a longtime supporter of Kaepernick’s, especially after the quarterback started kneeling during the national anthem before football games as a way to protest police brutality against black men. And over the weekend, Durant took to Instagram to post a picture of Kaepernick — a screenshot taken from his recent Nike ad campaign — with the simple tag, “@Redskins.”
It was a message encouraging Washington to sign Kaepernick. The Redskins have lost both Alex Smith and Colt McCoy to leg injuries but are in the middle of the playoff race in the NFC.
But asked whether the team adding Kaepernick was a requirement for Durant’s continued support, the Warrior said, “I don’t think that’s going to stop me from being a fan.”
“Obviously as a fan, we don’t get everything that we want,” Durant told reporters, according to the San Jose Mercury News. “But I understand the difference between actually saying something and then it getting it done as a fan and what happens within the organization. I know my place and my whole role in this thing. I’m just giving my support to somebody who I believe should be in the NFL.”
Durant grew up in Prince George’s County, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, and has supported the Redskins since childhood.
