Trump lawyer Rudolph Giuliani said Friday that special counsel Robert Mueller accused former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort of violating his plea deal by lying about the president.
Mr. Giuliani said Mr. Mueller specifically took issue with Mr. Manafort’s testimony that the president knew nothing about the 2016 Trump Tower meeting between members of his campaign and Russians.
“In the questioning of Manafort, they did tell them at the time that they believed he was lying about certain things related to us that he’s not lying about,” Mr. Giuliani said, CNN reported.
Mr. Giuliani recently confirmed that the legal teams for Mr. Manafort and Mr. Trump are sharing information regarding the special counsel.
The special counsel team took Mr. Manafort back to court late last month for breaking his plea deal by allegedly lying to investigators.
At the time, the special counsel did not divulge what Mr. Manafort potentially lied about, but he faces a Friday deadline to submit his explanation to the court.
Since the reports of Mr. Manafort’s new legal woes surfaced, Mr. Trump has been harshly criticizing the Mueller investigation, accusing him of pressuring witnesses to give false statements.
“Wait until it comes out how horribly & viciously they are treating people, ruining lives for them refusing to lie,” the president recently tweeted.
