INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Officials say the Indianapolis school district’s interim superintendent is the first black woman to hold the post.
The Indianapolis Star reports Friday that Aleesia Johnson, who had been the district’s deputy superintendent, was named to the top job while board members search to replace Lewis Ferebee . Ferebee was hired to be chancellor of public schools in Washington, D.C.
Board members say she’s also the third woman to lead the state’s largest school district.
Earlier this year, Ferebee was being considered for the top job in the Los Angeles school district . He had been in Indianapolis since 2013, after a series of jobs in North Carolina schools.
Voters recently approved property tax increases worth $272 million for a variety of initiatives in Indianapolis, including higher teacher pay.
