President Trump on Friday renewed his call for individuals convicted of killing police officers to receive the death penalty.
“We believe the right punishment for all cop killers is called the death penalty,” he said before a gathering of law enforcement officials at a Project Safe Neighborhoods conference in Kansas City.
“You know in some circles that is very controversial to say that — and we have all of the television cameras rolling back here — for me it’s not even a little bit controversial,” Mr. Trump said. “You kill a cop, and it’s called the death penalty, OK.”
During the 2016 presidential election, then-candidate Trump vowed to sign an executive order authorizing cop killers to be put to death. He revived that call in May but has yet to sign such executive action or send legislation to Congress.
