MCDONOUGH, Ga. (AP) - The Latest on the shooting of a police officer southeast of Atlanta (all times local):
4 p.m.
Authorities say a single gunshot critically wounded a police officer and killed another man as the two struggled after the officer responded to a report of a disturbance at a dentist office southeast of Atlanta.
Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Natalie Ammons told reporters the staff at the business called 911 a little after 8 a.m. Thursday to report a man causing a disturbance.
Henry County police Officer Michael Smith responded and spoke to the man, identified as 53-year-old Dimaggio McNelly of McDonough. Ammons says McNelly became combative and the officer fired his stun gun multiple times but it had no effect.
Ammons said the shot was fired from the officer’s gun as the two struggled after McNelly lunged at the officer.
Ammons said the staff at the dentist office didn’t know McNelly and didn’t know why he was there.

Authorities say a police officer is in critical condition after being shot in a dental clinic southeast of Atlanta during an encounter with a suspect who was killed.
Henry County Deputy Police Chief Mike Ireland tells WSB-TV the wounded officer was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta after the Thursday morning shooting.
Henry County police Capt. Joey Smith tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution the officer was in critical condition.
Police said in a midmorning update that the suspect was killed.
Smith said there was something unusual about the suspect that prompted people at the dental clinic to call 911. Smith told reporters the officer tried to approach the suspect, the two struggled and gunshots were fired.

Authorities say a police officer has been shot southeast of Atlanta.
Henry County Deputy Police Chief Mike Ireland tells WSB-TV the wounded officer was being taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta after the Thursday morning shooting. The officer’s condition wasn’t immediately known.
Henry County police were asking the public to avoid the area. They said in a tweet that the scene has been secured, and that there’s no risk to residents.
Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Nelly Miles says Henry County police have requested that it investigate the shooting. She said GBI agents were responding to the scene.
No further details were immediately released.
Henry County is about 25 miles (40 kilometers) southeast of Atlanta.
