More Americans are concerned about Hillary Clinton’s private emails than they are about Ivanka Trump’s — but the partisan divide runs deep.
Overall, 48 percent of voters said the former secretary of state’s use of a private email server to send confidential information was a major problem, according to a new Morning Consult poll released Wednesday. The recent revelations of Ms. Trump’s private emails was equally concerning for 41 percent of voters.
Blame and concern overwhelming fell on one side or the other depending on what party was asked.
Nearly 80 percent of Republicans faulted Mrs. Clinton, while 64 percent of Democrats said the same for Ms. Trump, the president’s eldest daughter and one of his advisers.
Neither party found the issue was as concerning when the tables were turned. Only 24 percent of Democrats said it was a major problem for Mrs. Clinton, and 16 percent of Republicans said the same for Ms. Trump.
However, when it comes to independents, half said Mrs. Clinton’s emails were a major issue, while only 38 percent felt the same about Ms. Trump’s.
In November, reports surfaced and were quickly confirmed by Ms. Trump’s lawyer that she used a private email to send hundreds of emails to members of the administration in 2017.
The revelations were seen as hypocritical by critics, especially since Mr. Trump harped on Mrs. Clinton’s email scandal during the 2016 campaign.
Ms. Trump defended herself in an interview soon after the reports came out, emphasizing that all of her correspondence was preserved and contained no sensitive information.
