PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Rhode Island Foundation says it has convened education leaders and other officials to craft a plan for the state’s public school system.
The philanthropic foundation is looking to craft a 10-year strategic vision, saying the decision came before standardized test results showed Rhode Island students trailed far behind students in Massachusetts. Foundation President Neil Steinberg tells WPRI-TV that he is hopeful the scores create a sense of urgency for the long-term Education Planning Committee.
The foundation has put up $150,000 and the Partnership for Rhode Island has kicked in $100,000 to fund the group. According to Steinberg, the group first met on Nov. 27 and has already scheduled six more meetings in the coming months.
