SAN DIEGO (AP) - Authorities have identified an Orange County surfer who died at a popular San Diego County surf spot.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports the San Diego County medical examiner’s office says 53-year-old Ellis John Manugo Pontillas was paddling out to the Upper Trestles at San Onofre State Beach around 7 a.m. Saturday when he attempted to dive under a wave.

Authorities say witnesses then saw Pontillas floating face down and unresponsive in the water. Some called 911 and began CPR.

The medical examiner’s office says paramedics and other personnel from the Camp Pendleton Fire Department responded and took over CPR, but Pontillas “was unable to be revived and his death was pronounced.”

The cause and manner of his death are under investigation.
