CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia’s newest Supreme Court justice will assume his position after being sworn in this week.

The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports the swearing-in ceremony for Raleigh County Circuit Judge John A. Hutchison will be held on Jan. 4.

Hutchison was appointed on Dec. 12 to the Supreme Court by lifelong friend, West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice. He will fill the seat of convicted former Justice Allen Loughry.

Hutchison is the third appointee to a court rocked by an impeachment scandal. He will serve until a 2020 special election.

Loughry’s resignation was effective Nov. 12, about a month after a federal jury convicted him on 11 charges.

Justice has said he hopes Hutchison and the four other justices can “restore dignity and greatness” to the court.
