Dozens apply to be Colorado Springs’ next police chief

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - More than 60 people have applied to become Colorado Springs’s police chief when Pete Carey retires on Feb. 1.

The Colorado Springs Gazette reported Sunday the some of the applicants work for the police department now and others come from out of state.

City spokeswoman Jamie Fabos declined to discuss details but said officials are pleased with the applicant pool.

Mayor John Suthers will make the final decision, with input from the City Council.

Carey will become an undersheriff for the El Paso County Sheriff’s Department. Colorado Springs is in El Paso County.

Deputy Chief Vince Niski will serve as head of the Police Department until a new chief is selected.
