Washington Wizards All-Star point guard John Wall will elect to have surgery on his left heel, ending his season.
The Wizards confirmed Wall’s decision Saturday night in a news release.
Wall missed the Wizards game Friday and met with a foot specialist Saturday. The guard has dealt with bone spurs in his left heel for a few years, and the surgery will cause him to miss 6-8 months, according to the Washington Post.
Wall also missed 41 games last season with a left knee injury.
Wall, 28, has yet to enter the supermax extension portion of his contract, which kicks in next season. He and Bradley Beal have both been the targets of trade rumors as the Wizards have floundered to a 13-23 start in the first two months of this season.
Without Wall on the court Friday night, Beal scored 34 points — his fifth game scoring 30 or more in December alone — but the Wizards lost 101-92 to the Chicago Bulls.
There are few other point guard options on the Wizards’ roster while Wall recovers from surgery. Tomas Satoransky, who started in place of Wall Friday, is likely the Wizards’ best option going forward.
Despite the lingering heel trouble, Wall averaged 20.7 points and 8.7 assists per contest this season over 32 appearances. The undisputed highlight of his shortened season was an explosive 40-point showing against LeBron James on Dec. 16 to lead the Wizards to a win over the Los Angeles Lakers.
