ASHBURN — The Washington Redskins on Thursday placed tight end Jordan Reed and quarterback Colt McCoy on injured reserve.

Reed suffered a foot injury on Dec. 9 against the New York Giants and has missed the last two games. McCoy, on the other hand, is still recovering from breaking his leg on Dec. 3 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Redskins held out hope the two could return, but with the team eliminated from the playoffs and the roster spots needed for other players, Washington chose to shut down the two before Sunday’s game against the Eagles.

In corresponding moves, Washington signed defensive end Marcus Smith and promoted defensive back Alex Carter from the practice squad.

The Redskins now have 23 players on IR, matching last year’s total.
