“Star Wars” star Mark Hamill says he gets annoyed when people make comparisons between President Trump and Darth Vader, because at least the fictitious supervillain eventually “repented” for his misdeeds.
The outspoken liberal actor, best known for his role as Luke Skywalker in the “Star Wars” franchise, made the comments during a Christmas Day podcast with The Washington Post’s Jonathan Capehart.
“Listen, I really get upset then when people compare [Mr. Trump] or even Dick Cheney to Darth Vader because Darth Vader repented,” Mr. Hamill said. “He saw the error of his ways. I don’t see either one of them doing that.”
Mr. Hamill, a prolific Twitter user who roasts Mr. Trump on a regular basis, called the president a “big, loudmouth, grandiose, gaudy egomaniac with zero sense of self-awareness.” He also said the president is a “highly amusing” character and would almost be funny if he weren’t in a position of such power.
“He’s a preposterous person. It’s a preposterous presidency,” the actor said. “It would be funny if the stakes weren’t so high.”
However, Mr. Hamill said he understands why people voted for the president because of how he resonated with the working class during the 2016 presidential campaign.
“I sympathize with the people that voted for him, because, hey, politics as usual — it makes me sick, too,” he said. “They were so wanting to just blow up the system — I get that. And if I knew he weren’t a pathological liar, I could have voted for him.
“I’m middle class, that’s where I came from, but I knew he was saying anything to get their votes,” he added. “So, with the help of Russia, he was somehow able to do it.”
