OPINION:
The extent to which corporate America has become focused on greed is laid bare by the imbroglio involving former CBS entertainment kingpin Leslie Moonves. Mr. Moonves stands accused by multiple women who have been employed by the network of having used them solely to provide sexual gratification.
Mr. Moonves is outraged that his $120 million severance package is in jeopardy as the network asserts that he was discharged for cause and that he was not honest and forthcoming in the investigation initiated into his conduct. The $120 million payout would be on top of the stunning $140 million Mr. Moonves received in compensation over the past two years.
U.S. law allows for the payment of obscene amounts of money to individuals like Mr. Moonves. In recent years, we have seen the space between the “haves” and “have nots” increase exponentially. It is not a healthy phenomenon.
Let us hope that we are at the end of the Moonves/Cosby/Weinstein era, in which powerful men use their stature and positions to take shameful advantage of women who are in awe of them and their stature.
