CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island schools superintendent is proposing a longer school day as a way to boost student performance.

The Providence Journal reports Central Falls Superintendent Victor Capellan is suggesting 60 to 90 minutes of additional instructional time each day.

He said students’ scores on the latest standardized tests hit him like a “punch in the gut” and the district needs to handle the situation like an emergency.

He also suggested making extra help available to students on Saturdays and preparing all teachers to teach students who are learning English.

The city’s beleaguered school system was taken over by the state in the early 1990s and came under national attention in 2010 when a superintendent moved to fire the entire teaching staff amid a dispute with the union over reforms.
