HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen says the state will be suing OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma and several current and former company officials on allegations their marketing of the painkiller helped fuel the nation’s opioid crisis.
Jepsen said Thursday that the lawsuit will be filed in state Superior Court in Hartford after the defendants are formally served with the complaint.
Connecticut is joining other states and cities across the country that are suing the Stamford-based company and other drugmakers for allegedly helping spur a dramatic increase in opioid addiction and overdose deaths.
Jepsen alleges Purdue Pharma’s marketing tactics to sell the painkiller OxyContin misled doctors and patients in part by downplaying the risks of addiction.
Purdue Pharma denies all allegations that its marketing strategies helped contribute to the crisis.
